40 years ago this week the first Starbucks in Seattle, WA opened its doors. Since then the Starbucks brand has grown into one of the most recognizable in the world. The coffee giant was one of the first branded badges on Foursquare and that badge is still available today for users who visit 5 different locations. Starbucks launched a limited edition Tribute badge to celebrate their 40th anniversary that is available today through Saturday (3/10-3/12) and Foursquare users who unlock the badge will see this text:
Thank you. We started in 1971 and are turning 40. You’ve earned this badge and a chance to win a $40 Starbucks card. Sweepstakes ends 3/12/11. For complete details: http://sbux.co/TributeBadgeRules
Users who visit a location will earn this badge and will be entered into a sweepstakes to win one of 500 $40 Starbucks gift cards. You will need to follow Starbucks on Foursquare before checking in to earn the badge and to be entered to win one of the gift cards. As a bonus for all visitors today Starbucks is giving away a free “afternoon treat” from 2-5pm local time (3/10).
I am a big fan of limited edition badges like this one that inspire users to take action. The sweepstakes component will also provide even more incentive for users to visit their local Starbucks during the promotion window. Congratulations Starbucks on reaching 40 years and for continuing your partnership and involvement with Foursquare.
