The Pennsylvania Travel & Tourism Board (Visit PA) recently announced the creation of a new Foursquare badge to celebrate Groundhog Day, arguably the quirkiest US holiday. On February 2, all across the country people will look to the small Pennsylvania town of Punxsutawney where tens of thousands of spectators will gather to see the town’s groundhog Phil predict how much longer our winter weather will last. If Phil sees his shadow and goes back into his burrow, then lore says we can expect another 6 weeks of cold weather (more on Groundhog Day). Visit PA was the first and is still the only state to offer Foursquare badges that users can unlock by exploring venues around the state. This new “PA Groundhog Day” badge is certainly a visual improvement over the other three available PA badges and may very well take the “cutest badge” title.
To unlock the badge, simply follow Visit PA on Foursquare and between 12:01am and 11:59pm EST on Feb 2nd shout the word “groundhog” to earn this quirky merit badge.
Punxsutawney Phil is not the only weather predicting groundhog in the country. In fact, we have one right here in metro Atlanta at the Yellow River Game Ranch who helps predict the weather for the Southeast: General Beauregard Lee. The Yellow River Game Ranch is a great place to visit in Lilburn spanning over 24 acres and is home to approximately 600 different birds and animals. I’m not sure what groundhogs do the other 364 days a year when they aren’t pretending to be meteorologists, but I do know one thing they shouldn’t do…no matter how much they beg and plead with you…never…ever let them drive.
