2013 National Day of Service Badge

The National Day of Service was created in 1994 to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by encouraging civic volunteer action. Foursquare has partnered with the Presidential Inaugural Committee to bring users the first badge designed to reward those who volunteer on Saturday January 19th. To earn the badge, find an official service volunteer event and be sure to check-in at that location when you show up to volunteer your time. That’s it! If you happen to be attending the Inauguration in Washington DC you can earn the badge when you check-in at the National Mall.

Atlanta is the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and served as a critical location in the Civil Rights Movement. The King Center and the Sweet Auburn Historic District are a wonderful place to learn and explore if you have yet to visit them.

As someone who volunteers his time regularly, I’m glad to see Foursquare making an effort to use their platform to encourage others to do the same. Hopefully, those who do not volunteer throughout the year will be encouraged to give back on the 19th and start a new trend for themselves in 2013. The most valuable asset you can give to a non-profit organization is your time.
